Wild Food...

I have a hard time passing up things like... A local old guy who was a major vintner died. Now I see his old overgrown, weedy vines along the road -- chock full of ripe grapes now. Makes me wanna pick 'em SO BAD. They go to waste each year now, I'm pretty sure.

I'm the same about roadside apple trees: all those apples, I want 'em for cider.

The wild apples are rockin' around here now! I can't take it.

I'm big on free wild food. (We had a fresh-caught bass dinner last week. A pal and I went out on Lake Lansing and brought home a few fatties. We were just piercing their lips like folks usually do out there. They was FOOD!

I look longingly at the wild oyster mushrooms that keep cycling through sprouting periods on a big ol' maple log on the ground next to our house. I've heard they're choice. Too bad I don't cook much or have any time and I doubt M wants to add 'em to the mix -- she doesn't have time to fool around either. But I can still look at 'em...

Actually, I just need to get out for a mt-bike ride on our local trails and see how the fall colors are doing.

(Years ago I posted a link here to a story about a guy who bike-toured California for months without spending $ -- he chowed on volunteer roadside figs (no orchards, he said). Mmmm, figs. Fresh ones. Ever had 'em? Wow.)
